ALBERT STREET HAPPENINGS

This is what I have been doing with the children the past few weeks.

The Grade 2s had been learning about fractions by copying examples from the board. I took in a big bar of chocolate and talked about sharing. What is FAIR and NOT FAIR. After a few simple diagrams on my "board" I took out a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter and a bottle of "Honey Badger friendly" honey. I asked which did they want and how did they want their sandwich cut. Quarters - in triangles or rectangles? Or in Halves- triangles or rectangles? Or in thirds? Now, that was a fun and memorable way to learn about fractions!

The children have little to play with in their limited concrete jungle. I bought eight skipping ropes for them to play with. Boy, were they popular! I write down who borrows them and they have to return them after break. Active children = happy faces.

The Grade 3s listening to an information story about hippopotamuses. They were all gathered around my little "jellyfish" speaker. It was difficult to hear, but it was a more interesting way to engage their learning spirits. Afterwards, they answered oral  comprehension questions about the story. Then, we played a true/false game. To finish the lesson, the children had to write down four things that they learnt about hippos.

The Grade 3s loved the activity where they got to use scissors and glue! They had to cut,
match and glue the synonyms. The majority of their lessons are copying and reciting.

Here, they are unscrambling and writing "jumbled sentences".

The Grade 1s were treated to watermelon after learning about "The Enormous Watermelon".
Needless to say, they loved eating the delicious, juicy watermelon!

These are the Grade 2s who listened to the story of "Goldilocks and The Three Bears". (My favourite story when I was little!) They had to put the pictures in sequence and write/retell the story. Not many of these children could write by themselves. The following week, we did an innovation of this story called "Krul Koppie and the Three Zebras". Krul Koppie is Afrikans for Curly Hair.

Now I have two weeks off from teaching at the school as we are going away on a very special 10 day safari. Log back into my blog in a couple of weeks time to see what I have been up to!
