PORTUGAL & SPAIN : GUIMARAES & PORTO

We left Nazare and headed to Porto. We stopped off at Coimbra which is home to Portugal's oldest and highly respected  university and the birthplace of six kings! Whilst having coffees, we noticed buses full of little schoolchildren getting off and going into a theatre. They all had identical smocks on and were holding onto each other as they followed the teacher inside. After our coffees, we set off on our walk to the university campus. We had to walk up steep roads and many, many stairs! We also visited another beautiful and old church there. Mr. O. told me only one church a day! There are so many churches in Portugal (and Spain), sometimes it was hard to choose!

We left Coimbra towards Guimaraes. Shanne had made a reservation for us to stay at the Pousada de Santa Marinha  at Guimaraes. A Pousada was an old monastery that has been converted into a five star hotel. It was very, very big and very, very elegant.

We got directions to sigh see around Porto...or did we? Where are we crew?

Aqui! Here!
We visited the local markets.

And Porto's famous Cafe Majestic. Very posh!

 People everywhere!

Spectacular Porto. This area is under the UNESCO world heritage listings.

 By foot...

And by boat...

Saint Elmo tile mural. St. Elmo is patron of seafarers.

Porto is famous for it's port! In fact the word "port" came from the word "Porto"!

And ....happy me!
