CYCLING AROUND JOZI

We met a fabulous character called Vincent who owns motorised cycling businesses throughout the world. He has a business here in Jozi and he offered to take us for a spin! What fun we had cycling through the leafy suburbs of the wealthy! Stopped off at an antique shop where I found these cabaret hats. Too tempting for us!

ICOT LADS - PARACHUTES, WEAVINGS & GOODBYES

I gave each boy a plastic bag, some string, scissors and a toy soldier.
Their mission? To make a parachute.
Much fun was had by all!

Another day, I took sate sticks and wool (donated kindly by Ms Beanie).
The project was to make a weaving called a "God's Eye".
Good for fine motor control. The boys enjoyed this activity and
were quite particular about which colours would co-ordinate.

The fabulous Headmaster, Mr. Dougie, or "Sir" to the boys.

Farewell ICOT Family!
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of working with you all!

FAREWELL TO ALBERT STREET SCHOOL

Last Thursday was my last day at Albert Street School, the Zimbabwean refugee school managed by the Central Methodist Church. I have spent six months volunteer teaching at the school. Ms  Beanie was heading off to the USA for a month and me returning to Australia in the coming weeks. We decided to jointly host a "braai" (barbecue) and have boerwors (sausages) for 150 students and staff. Her son, Max, and Mr. O. came to help the Year 6 boys tend the braai, while Ms. Beanie and I supervised the girls in organising the serving of the boerwors and drinks. With smoke everywhere, tongs at the ready and hungry tummies, the braai finally fed all of the children in Years 1-7.

In a traditional African way, the children and staff had speeches, songs and dancing to make me feel appreciated and special.

Bishop Paul came to say thank you and goodbye to me.

Boys are always happy to braai!
Beautiful faces!

The students and staff have touched my heart. I shall remember them all. But nothing touched my heart more than this beautiful letter from my colleague, Mr. Whende.

FAREWELL ALBERT STREET SCHOOL!
Thank you for allowing my the privilege of teaching at your school!

MARKETS ON MAIN @ MABONENG

One Sunday, we ventured out to Maboneng with our  Aussie friends, Ruth and John who were visiting us from Maputo. We went in search of  "The Markets on Main".

Arts on Main is a mixed-use creative hub and offers Joburgers a wide range of multi-disciplinary events, galleries and shops.
Arts on Main is a blend of creative, office, gallery and retail space. It brings together some of the best of Johannesburg’s art, artists, eateries and urban office space as well as hosts the popular Market on Main every Sunday.

These are some photos taken on the day.

HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, POPPY!

One of the downsides of living overseas is being away from family and friends, especially for special celebrations. Mr. O's father turned 90 on August 1st. The family gave him a big party. He loved it all!
We will have to celebrate all the birthdays we have missed when we return!
